Basically, you multiply the sale price ($45) by the discount (25%). 

This is what you would do in a calculator:
45*.25 = 11.25, 11.25+45 = 56.25

Or, you could multiply 45*1.25 (1.25 because you want to find the cost of item before tax) to get the same answer.
