x^2 - 19 - (17 - x).

Distribute -1 to each term of g(x).

x^2 - 19 - 17 + x.

Replace x with 5.

5^2 - 18 - 17 + 5

25 - 18 - 17 + 4

Simplify.

-6 is your answer.
