5 - 8 (a - 3) = 93    Expand the parentheses by using the distributive law:-

5 - 8a + 24 = 93

-8a + 29 = 93    Subtract 29 from both sides:-

-8a = 93 - 29

-8a =  64

a = 64 / -8

a = -8  answer
